Prevent Cancer by Drinking Coffee

This is good news for those who like to drink coffee. The result of the latest research in the United States shows, coffee drinkers - especially men - have a lower risk of suffering from a deadly type of prostate cancer.

Research over the next 20 years (1986-2006) involving nearly 50 thousand men revealed, those who drank at least six cups of coffee each day carrying 20 percent lower risk of suffering from prostate cancer than those who never drank coffee. In addition, coffee fans are also 60 percent lower risk of death from the disease than non-coffee drinkers.

'"Those who drink coffee at most 20 percent lower risk of prostate cancer during the period of monitoring. 20 percent lower risk was found in those who drank six cups or more, than those who do not drink coffee," said Lorelei Mucci, ScD, MPH, researcher and associate professor of epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health.

Still according to the research, those who love coffee, but limit caffeine levels also remained attained their benefits, because the type of decaf coffee as well as effective in preventing prostate cancer.

These findings, according to experts, given the significant impact of prostate cancer is a disease that often haunt The Adam. Each year an estimated 37 thousand new cases of prostate cancer, and caused at least 10 thousand deaths.

Even so, researchers from Harvard suggests, those who had been reluctant to drink the coffee does not need to change habits because of this research.

In his study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the research team compared the intake of coffee volunteer men, both types of regular or decaf coffee. The volunteers also were interviewed about their dietary intake among every four years based on medical records.

Recorded almost two-thirds or about 66 percent of the volunteers drank at least a cup of coffee a day, and 5 per cent drank at least six cups or more every day. Of the total of 47,911 volunteers were involved, including 5035 with prostate cancer, with 642 men suffering from lethal tumor.

The researchers noted that coffee consumption in small amounts - one to three cups per day - can also reduce the risk of deadly prostate cancer by 30 percent. Total intake greater greater effect.

More important, the researchers say, this relationship can not be taken to mean that coffee drinkers have a healthier lifestyle. In fact, they also tend to smoke and lack of exercise. Caffeine is also known for having a number of health benefits including reduced risk of asthma, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis.

But in this case, experts believe that there are other chemicals in coffee that provides benefits for the prevention of prostate cancer. They estimate, a kind of anti-oxidant substances may reduce the risk of cancer and prevent the growth of tumors by reducing levels of a number of deadly sexual hormones, regulating blood sugar levels and mecegah inflammation or inflammation.

"The relationship between coffee and lower risk of advanced prostate cancer is biologically acceptable," the researchers claim.

Meanwhile, Mark Kawachi, MD, director of the Prostate Cancer Center at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Duarte, California argues that the coffee is a very complex beverage. "In it there are so many chemicals, both existing and yet unknown," he said.
Therefore, the results of this research must be proven and validated by further research which is also independent. The reason, this research only proves the relationship between coffee consumption with lower risk of deadly prostate cancer.
